Enjoy the trip, Justin! I’d recommend at least one day trip, perhaps even 2, outside of Rome. Doesn’t even matter where you go, but I think you may find Rome too packaged and insufficiently authentic. Ostia is close and different enough. If part of your joy in traveling is learning about a country’s culture, you’ll need to venture out of Rome itself to experience that.
Ostia is on the list! We had considered Venice and Amalfi Coast, but decided the crowds would be nuts and we would come back as empty nesters for a different experience. I am thinking of this one as Disneyland but with real stuff, and for grownups - and at the pace of someone with a state resident pass…

Have a wonderful time. The museums and historical sites, of course, are awesome. Everything in the Vatican is awe-inspiring
